The story behind the pet wall

If you walk into the PD Insurance centre, you’ll immediately notice something that doesn’t look very “corporate”.

One entire wall is covered in pets – and it’s starting to take over another.

Dogs mid-zoomie. Cats striking their best “I run this household” pose. Rescue stories. Puppies. Seniors. Fluff, spots, ears and whiskers everywhere. It’s colour, personality and pure joy – and it’s completely intentional.

Not every insured pet is up there (we’d need a building the size of Eden Park for that), but whenever one of our lovely pets convinces their owner to send in a photo, we print it, laminate it with care, and proudly add it to our growing wall.

And honestly? It feels like the best job in the world.

Why we do it

The Pet Wall isn’t just decoration – it’s our culture.

At PD, we’re proudly digital-first, easy to deal with and cost-effective – that’s our promise to Kiwi pet parents. But behind the streamlined experience is something deeply human: a genuine love of animals.

Insurance can feel transactional – policies, premiums, claims. The wall reminds us daily that what we’re really protecting is a much-loved member of someone’s family.

On busy days, when the phones are running hot or a claim is emotional, we simply look up.

And there they are.

A wall full of reasons why we do what we do. It keeps us grounded. It keeps us empathetic. And yes – it brings us joy.

There are plenty of “that’s paw-some!” comments, the odd “you’ve got to be kitten me!” moment, and more than a few collective awwwws when a new face goes up. We love to have fun – and that wall brings warmth into our everyday.

It’s also a visible reminder that we’re part of a growing community of Kiwi pet lovers who trust us to protect what matters most.

And if you stepped into my office, you’d probably reach a quick conclusion. Between the pet photos, four-legged figurines and the general theme of “anything with paws is welcome here,” it would be hard not to think I have a deep love for everything with four legs.

You’d be absolutely right.  Because for us, this isn’t just insurance.

And being able to protect that – even in a small way – truly is the best job in the world.

The very first pet photo to go up on the PD Pet Wall was Jupiter, or “Jupi,” as he’s affectionately known.  His mum proudly shared photos of her newest fur kid, an Australian Kelpie with a big personality and even bigger puppy energy, getting up to mischief as only puppies know how.

Like so many pet parents, Jupiter’s mum couldn’t help but share his antics, milestones, and unmistakable charm. Printing and placing Jupi’s photo on the wall felt like a small moment at the time, but it quickly became something much more meaningful. It was a simple reminder of why we do what we do, because behind every policy is a much-loved pet and a human who wants the very best for them.

Jupiter set the tone for what the Pet Wall represents today: pride, connection, and the shared joy of being a pet parent. It’s a celebration of the pets we protect, the stories we’re trusted with, and the culture we’re building together at PD – one paw-sonality at a time.

Since taking over the pet wall, I make a point of checking the folder each week to see if any new photos have been added. The team and I always get excited when new ones pop up, especially the photos that really capture a cat or dog’s personality. Those are our absolute favourites to put on display.

The team also loves trying to spot the pets they’ve helped get insured, which makes it even more special. We’ve even had to start expanding the wall as more photos come in, which has been really lovely to see.
