It’s almost National Mutt Day and we’re looking at the friendliest dog breeds out there. Now, dogs are naturally friendly, which is why we love them so much. But some breeds immediately come to mind when we think of this trait.

For this article, we’re taking ‘friendly’ to mean how social they are. And though we’ve got certain breeds listed here, it doesn’t mean that other dogs can’t be just as friendly. After all, every pup is unique.

10 of the friendliest dog breeds you can find

Every dog is an individual. There are plenty of mixed breed dogs and pups from breeds considered to be less friendly who will still do anything for a cuddle, and you might even find a Labrador or two who prefers to be left alone.

Any breed can be taught to be friendly, and any breed can be shy and unpredictable, depending on their level of socialisation and exposure to new things, the temperament of their parents and siblings, and even the situation at hand. So it’s not a given that by getting a certain breed, you’ll automatically have a friendly dog.

But if you don’t know where to start, looking into the friendliest dog breeds can set you on the right path.

1. Mixed breeds

Mixed-breed dogs – sometimes lovingly referred to as mutts – take our top spot because friendliness isn’t defined by pedigree. With their unique personalities, diverse backgrounds and huge presence in shelters and rescues, mixed breeds prove that some of the most loving, loyal and sociable dogs come without a breed label.

2. Labradors

One of New Zealand’s top dogs – and for good reason. Originally bred to help pull in nets and catch fish that escaped from fishing lines, the Labrador is known for their easygoing temperament with humans of all ages and sizes. Combine that with good looks and trainability, and it’s easy to see why they’ve become such sought-after family dogs and assistance dogs.

3. Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Though the Staffy has a tough exterior and a reputation as a fighting dog, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Staffordshire Bull Terriers are lovers, not fighters.

They’re actually one of those naturally friendly dog breeds and at heart are gentle souls who adore spending time relaxing with their humans. So much so that they’re often called ‘nanny’ dogs.

4. Retriever

Golden Retrievers are another very popular family dog. Similarly to the Labrador, they are intelligent, trainable, friendly, and good looking. While Retrievers were originally bred as gun dogs, they’re now seen fulfilling all kinds of roles. Whether you need a guide dog or just a best friend, they’ll always be there for you with a smiley face and a wagging tail.

5. Beagle

Beagles were bred to live in packs so tend to be naturally amiable. They’re playful and charming, and tend to get along well with humans and dogs alike. Beagles aren’t just friendly towards adults either. They’re generally very tolerant dogs, and do well with small kids.

While they’re definitely one of the friendliest dog breeds towards little ones, you’ll want to make sure you have a secure property. Otherwise, they could follow a scent to just about anywhere.

6. Boston Terrier

Boston terriers might be small, but they have a personality at least triple their size. Similarly to Staffies, they were originally bred to be fighting dogs but are now more suited to being playmates and companions.

Like most of the other friendliest dog breeds on our list, Bostons are easygoing and sociable. They’re also quite energetic so would fit well into an active family or one with kids who want to play all day.  And then there’s the fact that those upright ears are just toooo cute for words.

7. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Although Cocker and Springer Spaniels have developed a bit of a reputation as occasionally being snappy with children, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were basically created to be one of the friendliest dog breeds out there. Bred to be companion dogs, they’re calm, happy, and non-aggressive. Plus those ears are perfect for scratches and snuggles.

8. Pug

If you’re looking for a lap dog, a Pug might be just the ticket. Adored for their goofy personalities and quirky antics, Pugs are super friendly little guys who love everyone. They’re not particularly into activity and running so are perfect if your idea of a friendly dog breed is one who wants to spend their time curled up next to you while you watch your favourite series.

If you want to add a Pug to your family, it’s double important you find an ethical dog breeder. Purebred dogs are more likely to struggle with certain ailments and illnesses. Flat nosed or brachycephalic breeds like Pugs are prone to BOAS in particular.

9. Saint Bernard

A lap dog doesn’t have to be tiny. Or that’s what Saint Bernards think anyway. Originally bred to rescue lost hikers in the Alps, these gentle giants are one of the friendliest (and biggest) dog breeds out there. And they make great winter hot water bottles when they snuggle up against your legs too.

10. Border Collie

One of the most popular dogs in NZ, beloved Border Collies make amazing family pets. Though they definitely count as one of the friendliest dog breeds around, potential Collie parents should know that they need a lot of exercise (all of it!) and can start herding kids and cats if you don’t provide them with a good outlet for all that energy.

Honorable friendliest dog breeds mention: Corgi

Fit for a Queen, as proven by Queen Elizabeth II’s dedication to these fluffy monsters. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi isn’t only one of the friendliest dog breeds, it’s also one of the most adorable. They might not have long tails but if they did, you can guarantee it’d be wagging non-stop. With a perky personality to match those perky ears, you’ll have nonstop fun with one of these as your best buddy.

National Mutt Day?

As mentioned, we’re celebrating National Mutt Day, which is held twice every year on July 31 and December 2. Also widely known as National Mixed Breed Dog Day, this holiday focuses on embracing, saving, and celebrating mixed-breed dogs.

Why? Because mixed breeds make up the overwhelming majority of dogs in animal shelters. While there are no official figures in New Zealand, US shelters report between 70% – 90-% of their shelter dogs are mixed breed.

The day aims to reduce the high euthanasia and abandonment rates of shelter mutts by educating the public on how wonderful they are. We couldn’t agree more. Which is why they’re our top friendliest ‘breed’ of all.
