Love is in the air! With the world’s most loved-up day of celebration just around the corner, we’re swapping the roses and chocolates for chicken and catnip. Because our real true loves are the pets. If you want to spoil your furbaby, here’s how you can show your pet you love them on the 14th.
And don’t worry…we’re sure your spouse will understand why only Fido got a gift. So without further ado, here’s what to treat your pet to – because chocolate is bad for them!
1. Play with them
A little playtime and attention has been used to win dogs and cats over for yeeears. Because it works! Whether it’s a game of fetch with your pup or just dragging a shoelace around for your cat, they can’t help but love playtime.
Spend an hour or so playing your pet’s favourite game with them and they are sure to looooove you furever.
2. Feed them a special dinner or treat
Look, there’s a reason that so many Valentine’s Day gifts revolve around food. Romantic candlelit dinners, homemade picnics, your favourite takeout, a box of Belgian chocolates. We could go on, but it’ll just make everyone hungry. Suffice to say that food isn’t only the way to the heart for humans, but to the hearts of your furry (or feathery, or scaly) friends too.
And no need to slave away over a three-course gourmet feast. Just make sure you give them something they can eat. Cooked chicken with pet-friendly gravy, a can of dolphin-safe tuna, or their most-loved treats are all sure to make them feel your love.
We know we’re talking about V Day here, but read our Christmas Dinner for Pets article to find out what pets can and can’t eat.
3. Don’t just show your pet you love them…tell them!
If you’re not telling your pets that you love them in a sing-song voice every day, do you even have them? Seriously though, we’re pretty convinced that pets (but especially dogs) know exactly what the L-word means. And research agrees! So continue using that high-pitched baby voice reserved for the furkids. And use it with reckless abandon, we say. There’s never too much love!
Shower them with lots of I Love You’s this V-day and tell yourself that they definitely said it back to you. If you’ve got a dog, check out our tips on how to speak dog (yep, really) so that you can tell them evvverything.
4. Spoil them with gifts
A little unexpected gift always makes you feel special, and we think the same goes for your pets. This Valentine’s Day, add them to your gifting list and show them how much you love them. What to buy? Well, we’re pretty sure that the cat version of roses is catnip. And it has the added bonus of putting your cat in that happy, lovey-dovey state. Did you know that catnip wards off mozzies too?
For the dogs, why not get them a fun new toy or a plush bed? Valentine’s Day lie-ins are the best special treat. Maybe you could even treat the royalty of the house to breakfast in bed? Or you could just let the cats and dogs sleep in your bed with you and treat them to an extra long snuggle!
5. Do a photoshoot to show the whole world that you love your pet
Got a bit of a poser for a pet? After all, yours is the most beautiful animal in all the world. Do a pet photoshoot with a cute Valentines theme. Good pictures of your pet make for priceless memories in later years. Maybe your pet will finally get the social media fame they deserve.
