Is there an International Dog Day? Of course! The answer is yes – there are too many dog loving peeps on the planet for there not to be one. Having said that, not every dog has its day because many land up in shelters. That’s one of the key messages of dog days in general, and this one in particular.

In this article, PD Insurance unpacks what International Dog Day is all about. From when it started and why, to ways to celebrate it with your darling dog this year.

What is International Dog Day?

International Dog Day is a global celebration of the companionship dogs provide people. Not only have they kept us safe, helped us hunt and been our friends over the eons, but they also work alongside humans in many expert roles.

  • Doggy colleagues. Dogs work in fields of rescue, policing, military work, disability support, therapy and more. They’re our best friends furever and ask for little but love in return (though pet insurance is a good idea too). Read all about inspiring NZ assistance dogs.

Every dog has its day which is why International Dog Day is about highlighted dogs in shelters in need of loving homes.

  • Destitute dogs. Sadly, many dogs are abandoned around the world and even in New Zealand, each day. NZ shelters are overpopulated with stray dogs. Surprisingly, despite being a devotedly pet-loving nation, unwanted puppies and dogs wait to be rehomed and not all find that happy ending.

Who started International Dog Day?

Colleen Paige is the woman who founded International Dog Day in 2004. Initially it was just ‘National Dog Day’ and only in the US, but it quickly became a worldwide celebration. Colleen is a woman of many talents who has masterminded several important global pet days.

She’s an animal rescue advocate, trainer, writer and a pet and family lifestyle expert. She launched International Dog Day to help more shelter dogs around the world find their furever homes. Read our dog adoption checklist along with tips for bringing an adopted dog home.

When is International Dog Day?

International Dog Day takes place on August 26th each year and this year it falls on a Monday. There’s a heartwarming, special story about why this date was chosen….

Colleen Paige who launched this pet holiday selected the very date that she got her first rescue dog. Colleen was just ten years old when she got her rescue dog Sheltie and this day forever commemorates that special moment.

If you’re someone who loves pets, but can’t own one yourself, it’s worth knowing what and how you can donate to animal shelters across NZ.
